ARC POETRY MAGAZINE book review by Kate Rogers – January, 2022

Book review by Kate Rogers

Jennifer Hosein’s A Map of Rain Days is “an unflinching evocation of the physical and emotional violence men can do to women under the pretext of love,” writes reviewer Kate Rogers, as well as “love for her mother and daughter [that] shines through even the bleakest of her poems.”

Seattle-based poet Brandon Pitts was in Toronto for the Canadian launch of his second collection of poetry, Tender in the Age of Fury, published by Mosaic Press. He performed to a standing-room only crowd at the Central Bar.

TENDER IN THE AGE OF FURY is a powerful collection of poems. In the words of Cathy McKim, blogger at Life with More Cowbell, “Pitts’ work is visceral, political, irreverent, historical, biblical, romantic, vulgar and lyrical. The book is available at http://www.brandonpitts.com/

I met Brandon at the late Nik Beat’s apartment in Toronto’s Beaches in the spring of 2011. We talked about writing, and I was inspired. And we became fast and close friends.

The long and the short of it is that Brandon chose my 2013 painting, Angel Over the City, for the book cover; it is a match made in heaven!
